When to use it

Empirical theses in economics, finance, accounting and management of the "effect of X on Y" kind. The empirical phase branches after the baseline regression into robustness checks and heterogeneity and mechanism analysis, matching the results chapter of such theses, so examiners can see at a glance that the tests are complete.

Making it yours

 • Name the model: F[Model specification
DiD / fixed effects], using
for a second line.
 • If you address endogeneity, add H --> N[Endogeneity: instrumental variables] after H.
 • Put the sample in the node, for example D[Sample
listed firms 2010–2023].
 • Without policy implications (accounting, corporate finance), rename L to "Managerial implications".
 • Switch to a light theme before exporting if the thesis is printed in black and white.

Draw an empirical research roadmap in Mermaid flowchart TB syntax for the topic [the effect of X on Y]. Use four subgraph phases: Theory and hypotheses, Research design, Empirical tests, Conclusions, with direction LR inside each. Steps: [background and question → literature review → theoretical analysis and hypotheses; sample and data sources (name the sample) → variable definitions → model specification (name the model); descriptive statistics → baseline regression, then two branches: robustness checks, and heterogeneity and mechanisms; findings → policy implications → limitations and outlook]. Connect the phases by their subgraph ids. Output only the mermaid code block.

FAQ

How detailed should an empirical roadmap be?

Detailed enough to show which tests you ran, not the coefficients or results. Reviewers look for a complete design: robustness checks, mechanism analysis and how endogeneity is handled, and one node each is enough.

Long model names make the nodes very wide. What can I do?

Split the node into two lines with
: the step on the first line and the model on the second. Or switch the overall direction to left-to-right in the editor's Layout menu so each phase stacks vertically.

How is this different from a research framework diagram?

The roadmap shows the research steps; the framework diagram shows the variables and hypotheses (independent, mediator, moderator, dependent). Empirical theses often include both, and the template library has a framework template.
