When to use it

For drafting a thesis outline, presenting the thesis structure in a proposal defence, or reporting progress at a mid-term review. Six chapters is the most common structure for empirical and design theses, and expanding each to its sections explains the whole thesis on one page.

Making it yours

  • Replace "Thesis title" in the root with your title; double-click chapter and section names in the preview to edit them.
  • Software capstones often use introduction, related technologies, requirements, design, implementation, testing, conclusion: add a seventh branch with the same indentation.
  • If discussion is part of chapter 4, delete the "Ch 5 Discussion" branch and renumber the rest.
  • To show progress at a mid-term review, add "done" or "in progress" after sections, or click a node to change its colour.
  • Levels are set by indentation, two more spaces per level; avoid round brackets in node text.

Draw a thesis outline mind map in Mermaid mindmap syntax for the thesis [your title], with the title as the root in double round brackets. First-level branches are the chapters: [Ch 1 Introduction; Ch 2 Literature and theory; Ch 3 Research design; Ch 4 Results and analysis; Ch 5 Discussion; Ch 6 Conclusion], each with 2–3 sections: [...]. Do not use round brackets in node text. Output only the mermaid code block.

FAQ

Can the outline replace the research roadmap?

No. The outline shows how the thesis is organised by chapter; the roadmap shows how the research is done step by step. Use the outline for the "thesis structure" paragraph of the introduction and the roadmap for the methodology; the template library has both.

The map gets too big with many chapters. What can I do?

Expand only to sections, not sub-sections, or collapse familiar chapters such as the introduction into one node. Export PNG at 3x so it stays sharp when zoomed.

Can I turn the mind map into a horizontal tree?

Mermaid mind maps always radiate outward. For a horizontal tree, use flowchart LR with one node per chapter and the sections hanging off it, as in the system function structure template in the library.
